the narrow escapes

how many times have you said to yourself, "wow, it was so lucky i missed the bus, i wouldn't have ______" ?
have you seen the movie sliding doors?
there are many people who had near misses on tuesday and are saying these things today. (i'm sure there are just as many people that had the opposite luck, but let's focus on happy stories for today).
i was browsing the wall street journal that arrives at my office each day. there were little blips on some people who escaped fate. there was a lady who was so upset about getting laid off from her job on monday... the job where she worked on the 105th floor of the first tower. there was the man who changed his flight at the last second, and still holds the ticket for flight 175. there was another man who missed the train because his baby daughter was fussing and rather than going to work, he went straight to a client appointment... and they all hugged him, crying, when he walked thorugh the door.
i'm not an overly emotional person. i'm not an overly patriotic person. but these images bring tears to my eyes so quickly i don't even believe it. i am wearing red, white and blue today. i'm forwarding on messages about candle lightings (see below). i want to be a part of the united states.
i want this world to be peaceful again.

We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism. Please pass this to everyone on your e-mail list. We need to reach everyone across the United States quickly.
The message: WE STAND UNITED - WE WILL NOT TOLERATE TERRORISM.
